Description


The City of Norfolk Department of Recreation, Parks, and Open Space is seeking a part-time Recreation Specialist to assist with the supervision of fitness programming, teach fitness courses, and provide first level staff oversight for the Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center (NFWC).


Essential Functions


Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists with the management of daily operations of the facility by scheduling and monitoring employees, supervising programs and participants, providing lesson plans and programming for fitness programs and personal training sessions.
  • Interacts with citizens by responding to inquiries, organizing and teaching fitness programs and contributing to the growth and development of all members and non members who participate.
  • Markets the recreations programs by creating and distributing flyers and announcements to the community.
  • Plans, implements and evaluates fitness programs and daily activities of the center and provides assistance to other employees when needed.
  • Develops a positive relationship with the public by responding to inquiries.
  • Ensures facility order and cleanliness.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance always.
  • Utilizes Rec Trac and PeopleSoft Software.


Education/Experience


Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

Six months experience.

The preferred candidate will possess:

  • AFAA Personal Training Certification or equivalent from an accredited organization.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Some experience with Rec Trac.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.


Additional Information & Requirements


  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires CPR/AED/First Aid Certification within six months of employment.

Work Location: Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center (NFWC), 7300 Newport Avenue, Norfolk.

Work Hours: 19.5 hours per week; hours scheduled Monday through Saturday; work hours are generally Monday-Friday from 6:00am to 8:30pm, and Saturdays from 8:00am to 5:00pm, and may vary based on operational needs.
