Britain’s Got Talent return is ITV’s most watched entertainment show of the year with more than 8 million viewers

BRITAIN’S Got Talent only returned to our screens this weekend but it’s already ITV’s most watched entertainment show of the year – with more than 8 million viewers.

The comeback episode of the talent show, hosted by Ant & Dec, saw judges Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, David Walliams and Amanda Holden moved by a magician’s emotional performance.

Britain’s Got Talent, presented by Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, returned to our screens on Saturday

ITV say it was also the most popular programme across all the channels so far this year for 16 to 34-year-olds.

But the show, which has given us the likes of Diversity and Susan Boyle, actually saw a fall in viewing figures on last year’s kick-off, which drew in 8.7 million, with a 42% audience share.

But Saturday night’s show peaked at 9.6 million viewers with a 41% audience share – making it the most watched programme of the night.

It surpassed the Grand National, aired on ITV earlier that afternoon, which saw a peak of 8.5 million viewers – an increase on last year’s 8.2 million.

Simon Cowell tried to cut short Matt Johnson’s risky act as he went with more than two minutes without oxygen

Fans were delighted to see Ant McPartlin back on TV beside Declan Donnelly during the show at the weekend.

The pre-recorded auditions were filmed prior to Ant’s drink driving crash that prompted Ant to step out of the spotlight to address his addiction.

The duo hit their golden buzzer for magic act Marc Spelmann who managed to reduce the audience to tears with his performance.

He has since has opened up about the “pure hell” he and wife Tessa went through when the latter was diagnosed with breast cancer during her pregnancy.

Meanwhile music teacher Robert White got four yeses for his song which joked that Simon had no friends, slammed Amanda’s fashion sense and Alesha’s looks and claimed David Walliams was on gay dating app Grindr.

And Alesha couldn’t hide her discomfort  when escapologist Matt Johnson attempted  to break out of a padlocked water tank.

Child prodigy Calum Courtney, who you might recognise from an incredible viral video, also appeared on Saturday night’s show.
