As James Packer struggles with mental health, ex-wife Erica has always been there

The timing can hardly have been worse. Just as James Packer was checking into The Pavilion, Boston’s McLean $35,000 per week medical facility, accompanied by his mother, Ros, and Consolidated Press Holdings boss Guy Jalland, Erica Packer was preparing to return to Sydney with their children to spend Easter with their family and friends.

The former model and singer, 40, along with children Indigo, 9, Jackson, 8 and Emmanuelle, 5, were set to arrive in time for the Easter festivities. A private home had been rented.

It’s been some time since the family had enjoyed time in Sydney and this trip was an opportunity to catch up with their relatives and good friends – a reminder to the children of their Australian heritage during one of the best times of the year.

The timing of the trip shows that the news of James Packer’s struggles with mental health issues came as a shock to even those in his inner circle.

Events moved swiftly last week with the announcement last Wednesday that he had resigned as a director of Crown Resorts for mental health reasons. By Friday he was photographed arriving in Mexico with his closest friends, including Jalland and Ben Tilley.

At the same time his mother, Ros, was flying out of Sydney to meet him and by Saturday he was admitted to The Pavilion, ranked the best mental health facility in the USA.

There had not been any plans for Packer to be in Sydney at Easter and he was reportedly going to spend time with another ex-wife, Jodhi Meares, in LA.

Erica Packer has also remained close to her ex-husband and joined him in Aspen at Christmas with the family, which he described as “the best Christmas ever”. He also spent time there with Canadian love interest Kylie Lim.

He and Erica Packer have remained close even when she was dating Seal and he was with Mariah Carey. It’s a testament to the graceful and mature way that she’s always handled herself.

Erica and James Packer have always put on a united front for their children and the family has fitted in beautifully to their life in Los Angeles, making friends there and enjoying their life in Beverly Hills.

This Easter trip was meant to be a reminder of all that Sydney has to offer and a chance to meet up with family and friends. No doubt they were hoping to spend time also with their grandmother, who’s also a frequent visitor in LA. However Ros Packer’s top priority now must be taking care of her troubled son.

James Packer has received a huge outpouring of support and well wishes since going public with his struggles last week. Many saw this as not only a brave move but an important reminder that mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and can touch anyone from any walk of life.

It’s hoped that the example that James Packer has set will allow more people to reach out for help.
