Joe Thomas appears set to make a stop in a TV studio or announcer’s booth before he’s enshrined at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Thomas had a tryout with Fox Sports about two weeks before he announced his retirement Wednesday after 11 seasons with the Cleveland Browns, a person with knowledge of the audition told USA TODAY Sports. The person requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the discussions. The 10-time Pro Bowl player already had made on-air appearances with ESPN in January on NFL Live.
It’s not clear what role – if any — Thomas would fill at either network.
The current priority at Fox is filling out its Thursday Night Football booth after the network landed the package that had been shared by CBS and NBC the last two seasons.
The New York Post reported Wednesday that Fox plans to bring in Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and retired Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer to try out for the analyst spot.
USA TODAY Sports reported last week that Fox has retired quarterback Peyton Manning atop its list for the analyst job.
